An overland truck bed setup has three jobs. It keeps your gear dry and locked, it gives you a place to sleep or a roof to mount a tent, and it carries recovery and fuel gear so you can get yourself out of trouble. Everything else is a nice extra. If a part of the build does not serve one of those three jobs, it is weight you are paying to carry.

Start with the roof: truck cap or tonneau cover

The first decision shapes everything after it. A tonneau cover keeps the bed flat and aerodynamic and still lets you carry tall gear in the open. A truck cap or bed cap closes the bed into a lockable box with a roof you can load, and it is the better base for a bed tent, a drawer system with a sleeping platform and roof-mounted gear.

For most overland builds the cap wins. It stays dry inside, it takes crossbars and roof tents, and it lets you leave the truck at a trailhead without tools in view. A tonneau cover is the better choice if you tow, haul bikes or lumber on the same truck, or want the lowest wind noise on highway days. Loose gear in an open bed turns into a pile within a day. Good overland truck bed storage gives every item a home and puts the heavy items low and forward, over the axle, where they do the least harm to handling.

One practical note: the wheel wells take space. Measure between them before you buy a mattress, and make sure the tent suits your bed length. If your drawers sit under a flat deck, the mattress goes on the deck and you gain storage underneath.

Recovery, fuel and tie-down gear

Recovery gear has to be reachable. If it is buried under camp gear, it is no help when you are stuck. Keep straps, a shovel and traction boards in the pod rack, a side box or behind the rear door of a cap, and keep them there permanently.

Weight, payload and fuel economy

Every part above adds weight, and payload is the limit that overland builds hit first. A cap, a drawer system, a tent, water, fuel, recovery gear and two people can use most of a mid-size truck's payload. Your truck's payload is on the sticker in the driver door jamb and in the owner's manual. Add up the weight of the parts and your load before you commit to the build.

Three example builds

Weekend build. A Tacoma or similar mid-size truck with the OVS Explorer soft shell cap as the shelter, plus the Pittman air mattress, a 4-pack of ratchet straps and a Honcho 80 case. It is light, quick to install and easy to undo.
