A mat is a layer between your cargo and the bed. It stops metal-on-metal scratching, adds friction so loads slide less and, in most designs, lets water drain or channel away. It does not seal the bed the way a coating does, so water, sand and salt can still reach the floor under it. Mat or coating: when a DIY liner makes more sense

How to choose a bed mat

Work through four questions before you buy.

1. What do you haul? Heavy, abrasive loads suit a rigid or high-traction mat. Fragile items suit carpet.
2. Do you want side and tailgate coverage? Only some mats include it. Check the listing.

Care and installation

Installation is simple for every mat on this list. They drop in, and the WeatherTech page also lists no-drill installation. Before the first install, wash the bed and let it dry. Then place the mat, check that it sits flat at the bulkhead and around the wheel wells and that it does not interfere with the tailgate latch.

For care, pull the mat a few times a year, rinse it, scrub it with mild soap and a soft brush, and hose the bed. Let both dry before you put the mat back. Hard mats can be hosed and shaken out. Carpet should be vacuumed and left to dry in the sun. Do not leave wet cargo on any mat for days.
